Hosted by WCCN

For over 40 years, Working Capital for Community Needs (WCCN) has created opportunities for access to microfinance and services to support low-income entrepreneurs throughout Latin America. As one of the first social impact funds in the United States, we have invested more than $150 million, reaching an average of approximately 21,000 end borrowers each year.

As an investor or donor of WCCN, you can personally make this life-changing work happen.

About This Trip

Your adventure begins at Aurora International Airport, where one of our trusted drivers greets you with a warm welcome. Soon, we’ll leave the bustle of Guatemala City behind and travel an hour west to Antigua, a colonial gem framed by volcanoes and cobblestone streets.

After settling in and taking a brief siesta, we’ll explore the city’s vibrant architecture and markets before gathering for a Bienvenidos Dinner at one of Antigua’s top restaurants, where creative cuisine and open-air ambiance set the stage for the journey ahead.

The next morning, after a fresh local breakfast, we’ll venture into the Guatemalan Highlands, connecting with communities, visiting Maya cultural sites, and witnessing the country’s living

traditions firsthand. As we travel through Lake Atitlán, Totonicapán, and Quetzaltenango, we’ll meet artisans, micro-entrepreneurs, and local partners shaping Guatemala’s future, all amid breathtaking scenery and authentic hospitality.

Our journey concludes back in Antigua, where reflection meets adventure. Together, we’ll ascend Acatenango Volcano for an unforgettable overnight trek, watching Fuego’s eruptions glow against the night sky.

Returning the next day, we’ll close our experience with a heartfelt Feliz Viaje Dinner, celebrating new friendships, shared purpose, and the spirit of Guatemala.

Day-to-Day Itinerary

Each day of our journey is carefully curated to ensure an easy blend of cultural experiences, meeting communities, travel, and downtime. We believe travel should be comfortable, stimulating yet never overly active, and also allow for mindfulness and rest as needed.

During free mornings or afternoon rest (siesta), guests will also have an optional activity. If a grander excursion is calling you, just let your host or guide know and we’ll coordinate to bring the most out of your time with us.

  • Once arrived at the airport, one of our trusted drivers will be waiting to sweep you away to the former capital, Antigua (roughly 1-hour ride depending on traffic). In Antigua, you will be checked into our hotel and given a brief orientation of the town.

Guests who need to visit the ATM or other vendors, simply let your guide know and they'll offer assistance. Should you arrive early in the morning and would like us to coordinate a day of exploration, let us know and we will make it happen!

After a quick siesta, we will enjoy a welcome happy hour before our “Bienvenidos” dinner to indulge in a delicious menu of a local favorite with scenic views of the town. Meanwhile, you will meet your guide and host, as well as mingle with fellow travelers. Your host will also share more about the week ahead and review itinerary details.

  • After a hearty breakfast with a view, we’ll journey toward Totonicapán, a highland city known for its vibrant Maya K’iche’ culture, intricate textiles, and centuries-old traditions of craftsmanship and community.

Along the way, we’ll take short breaks to stretch, soak in the scenery, and enjoy the changing landscapes of the Guatemalan Highlands.

Upon arrival in Toto, we’ll gather for lunch and a guided walking tour through the town’s artisan markets, meeting local craftspeople and discovering the rich cultural heritage and creativity of the K’iche’ Maya people.

Later in the afternoon, we’ll continue our journey to Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala’s second-largest city and a hub of art and education. Once there, you’ll have time for a siesta before we regroup for a night out in Zone 1, where lively conversation and local flavors mark the perfect close to our second day in the Highlands.

  • Today, we’ll spend the morning visiting our first local partner in Xela, touring their office and meeting the dedicated team behind their community impact. Through conversation and observation, we’ll gain a deeper understanding of how their innovative lending model supports local families and small enterprises.

After sharing lunch with the partner team, we’ll head into the field to meet loan recipients, hearing firsthand stories of resilience, creativity, and transformation that bring Guatemala’s entrepreneurial spirit to life.

That evening, guests may enjoy a free night — exploring Xela’s lively city center at their own pace or joining an optional group dinner for more connection and conversation.

  • We’ll begin the day with breakfast alongside our second local partner, followed by visits with several of their beneficiaries to see their initiatives in action and learn how access to capital is helping families build brighter futures.

With lunch packed for the journey, we’ll continue toward mesmerizing Lake Atitlán, often described as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, surrounded by dramatic volcanoes and traditional Maya villages.

Upon arrival, you’ll have time to settle in and relax with a tranquil siesta, letting the rhythms of the lake set the tone for the evening. As the sun dips below the volcanic peaks, we’ll gather for a family-style dinner, reflecting on our experiences in Xela and the stories that have inspired us along the way.

  • Today we’ll journey around the shores of Lake Atitlán, beginning with a visit to Friendship Bridge, one of Guatemala’s most respected microfinance and women’s empowerment organizations. There, we’ll meet a small business owner whose determination and creativity have transformed her family’s future — hearing firsthand how access to micro-loans has fueled opportunity and lasting change.

After lunch, we’ll dive deeper into the initiatives driving economic independence for women, learning how international partnerships are expanding job creation and strengthening local communities.

As evening falls, we’ll gather for dinner by the lake, followed by an optional talent show at our hotel — a lighthearted way to share laughter, music, and camaraderie under the highland stars.

  • We’ll begin the morning with a scenic breakfast overlooking Lake Atitlán, joined by the team from Albedo Solar‍, ‍WCCN’s first SME loan recipient. Gathering at Sabor Cruceño, we’ll explore how renewable energy and access to finance are fueling empowerment, expanding opportunity, and shaping a more sustainable future for Latin America.

By late morning, we’ll depart for Antigua, enjoying lunch along the way and watching as the landscapes shift from lakeside serenity to colonial splendor.

Upon arrival, guests may choose to enjoy a free evening wandering Antigua’s cobblestone streets, visiting artisan shops and cafés, or join an optional group dinner to share stories from the journey and toast to the days ahead.

  • We’ll set out early, departing Antigua at 6:30 AM for the adventure of a lifetime, the ascent of Acatenango Volcano. The hike rewards every step with sweeping views of the highlands, lush cloud forests, and the neighboring Fuego Volcano, known for its mesmerizing eruptions.

By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at our summit lodge, where a warm bonfire and cozy rooms await. As night falls, we’ll gather for fireside conversations, reflecting on our shared journey, the people we’ve met, and the stories that have deepened our connection to Guatemala.

This peaceful evening above the clouds offers a chance to slow down, take it all in, and celebrate how far we’ve come, both together and within ourselves.

  • After a leisurely morning descent from Acatenango, we’ll make our way back to Antigua, arriving just in time to unwind and savor the comfort of this beloved colonial city once more.

The afternoon is yours to rest, recharge, or explore at your own pace. Guests may wish to indulge in a relaxing massage to ease tired muscles or stroll through Antigua’s colorful streets, savoring coffee, culture, and conversation.

As evening falls, we’ll reunite for our Feliz Viaje Dinner, a joyful farewell gathering that celebrates the friendships, reflections, and unforgettable experiences we’ve shared along the way. Together, we’ll raise a glass to Guatemala’s beauty, resilience, and the lasting connections born from our journey.

  • All good things must come to an end, but it doesn't mean you can't take a part of Guatemala with you. We'll be sharing a (bonus) folder of candid pictures from throughout our trip along with a special thank you message.

Please confirm your departure date and time with us so we can coordinate your transportation to Aurora International Airport for a safe return home.
